Mayan Prophecy
"What is the Maya Calendar 2012 prophecy?" I asked.
He answered, "What does your calendar prophecize every year on December 31st? A new year on January 1st?"
"Will you teach me about the calendar?" I asked.
"Will you learn about the calendar?" he replied with a grin.
"Oh," he added quickly, "and just because the calendar doesn't end don't think you're off the hook. Changes are coming."
Mayan Civilization
The Maya, a civilization advanced in the use of writing, math and astronomy. An indigenous culture to Central America, the Maya flourished during the lamenting Middle Ages of Europe only to mysteriously abandon their major cities prior to the 14th century A.D., leaving major architectural accomplishments lying in ruins and in the clutches of the jungles they called home. One of their greatest gifts - a calendric system to learn of nothing less than time itself.
The Long Count - 13.0.0.0.0
"The best thing is to start with a reference point," he continued with a smile, "an anchor of sorts. Many are familiar with the Gregorian Calendar, you know, days, weeks, years and so on. A day in the Gregorian Calendar can be notated as 12.21.2012 or December 21, 2012. That same day can be notated as 13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count."
